Joy And Pain Tshirt Edition

In the Democratic Republic of Congo,millions of girls face significant barriers to education due to poverty,gender discrimination,and inadequate infrastructure. Education is a transformative right, but many Congolese girls are denied this opportunity, perpetuating cycles of poverty. The Malaika Foundation, a non-profit committed to empowering Congolese communities through education and health, leads this effort. Its flagship project, the Malaika School, provides free, accredited education to over 400 girls, from primary to secondary levels. The school’s holistic curriculum includes STEM, arts, physical education, and health and nutrition programs; also extending their impact through a community center offering adult literacy, vocational training, sports programs to over 5,000 people. This sustainable, community-driven approach is transforming lives and empowering communities across the DRC. We encourage you to support this cause and help further Malaika’s work. 

To contribute, artist Irene Fernández Arcas and musician D'aro Mambu organized together in Refuge Worldwide a fundraiser event in August 2024.

For it, irene launched a merch line titled “Joy&Pain,” designed specifically for this fundraiser. The collection explores life’s connection between trauma, resilience, joy,& pain. Inspired by the transformative power of music, the design emphasizes connection, healing, and hope. The concept, “tabasamu kupitia maumivu” (Swahili for “smile through the pain”), reflects the resilience and hope we aim to nurture. The item is a limited-edition shirt  printed in blue by blackandink.

This carpet was made for a solo show at Galerie Wedding in Berlin. It represents inner blossom and construction of a room of our own. It is about oneself dreaming and meditation on the inner space. A hug of three people, all our alter egos. That self love flourishes in a garden, plants and shine.

This work is created to be understood as an altar, and proposes a reflection on celebrations, and an invitation to look at our daily rituals with other perspectives. It is a tribute to the women of the family, and Granada; at the same time it is an offering to the health of the body and soul, and an exchange of joy as a resource for resilience. It also invites us to celebrate each small daily gesture with awareness, to focus on the beauty of the movements of our routine and daily rituals to enjoy our processes with love. Selfhug

Screenprinting A3 limited edition of 60 Frauen am Berg, the Woman in the mountain. Drawing I did for the exhibition with Nina Barretmemy at bBba.gallery beginning of 2019 / It’s about a place in Portugal I lived, “casa senhora do monte” but also about all the baggage we carry on our backs, sometimes material but often emotional. The stuff we carry can be lies we get attached to, even describe ourselves with, get comfortable and build a house in which we live. Climbing mountains with such a weight is difficult. Especially mountains we created ourselves out of problems and issues. Sometimes we might feel even like carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders, in those overwhelming times. But change and collective healing aren’t about fighting ourselves. So if we drop off some unnecessary materials on the way up, you might grow big and strong and build a house that is made of light empty spaces, to fill with dreams or positive attitudes.
